Is it fact or fiction?
Can you imagine of car that doesn’t
need to be driven by a human? To many,
this is simply not possible. However, based on the recent improvements and
advancements in technology, many people now believe that almost everything was
possible. There was a time when
Blackberry and Apple were terms that used to refer to fruits but now they refer
to techno gadgets. This seems to be true when you talk of self driving
cars. This was strongly affirmed by a
recently concluded conference that was held in St. Paul, Minnesota on Tuesday,
November 12, 2013.
So when is it likely
to happen?
According to the participants in the St. Paul
conference, it is unlikely that it will happen in the next few years. In fact,
it is forecasted that it will take some
several decades because there are many changes that lie on the way of realizing
and implementing that technology.
However, some others have disagreed with this forecast and they believe
that self driving cars could be on the U.S roads in the next few years. They base their assertion on the fact that
there have been serious advancements in robotics technology in the last few
years. These robots are now widely used by the military and other law
enforcement users. They argue that the technology of self driving cars is very
similar to that of robotics.
Autonomous cars are
not science fiction
Based on the current rapid rate of advancement
in technology, autonomous cars are not science fiction. Studies show that Google has for the past
several years been experimenting self driving cars, and actually has had may
self driving cars on United States roads during that period of
experimentation. This complements the
findings of another study which showed that many Americans prefer self driving
cars to be developed by IT firms, such as Google rather than car automakers.
Conclusion:
Although there are many challenges to
realization of the ream of self driving cars, based on the recent rapid
technological advancements, it can be predicted that in the next few years,
self driving autos may be on U.S roads.
